How Many Suits Does a Man Really Need in His Wardrobe?

Writer: Kevin KenealyKevin Kenealy

Regardless of how you prefer to dress or what your job is like, sometimes a suit is the only acceptable option.

But then, how many suits does a man need? Owning three suits in a wardrobe is the magic number for us. If you have an upcoming wedding, job interview, or business event, these men’s suits will never fail you.

The Navy Suit

In addition, a perfectly fitted navy suit is one of the few ensembles every man should own. It is a classic—and probably the most versatile—capable of serving you at the office and the next family wedding or special celebration.

Best is a simple, single-breasted design that you can dress up or down, depending on the occasion.

What to Wear with a Navy Suit?

What you decide to wear with a navy suit will depend on why you’re wearing it. White or pale blue shirts work well for formal occasions, as do patterned silk ties and Derby shoes.

A crew-neck T-shirt or roll-neck jumper paired with loafers or Chelsea boots could work well if your event is more casual.

While tan is often the go-to option for footwear, the versatility of a navy suit means you shouldn’t necessarily shy away from other colors, like black or burgundy.

The Gray Suit

A staple in any gentleman’s formalwear arsenal, the gray suit is just as versatile as its navy cousin. However, it is more businesslike in its application and is widely seen as the default option when blue may seem a tad too casual.

Because of this, the gray suit is great for job interviews or important meetings but will not look out of place for after-work drinks. If you’re a man who wears suits frequently, you may want to have two gray suits in your closet: a lighter gray suit for the summer months and a charcoal one for the winter.

What Do You Wear with a Gray Suit?

Gray suits are worn almost identically compared to navy suits. They go nicely with a variety of shirt colors—white, pale blue, and pink all work well—and look terrific with patterned or printed styles.

Gray suits can be dressed up with formal accessories or made more casual with T-shirts or knitwear. They can be worn with black, dark brown, or burgundy shoes; however, if you have a light gray suit, we recommend complementary black shoes.

The Black Suit

Slightly underappreciated, the black suit is much more adaptable than you think. Few suits are more reliable than this on that wide range of occasions, from dinner parties to job interviews and funerals.

It’s chic, straightforward, and easy to wear. With some expert sartorial work on the clothes, a person's outfit can be transitioned from hyper-formal to streetwise. Like all the suits on this list, a classic single-breasted cut will be worn the best.

What to Wear with a Black Suit

White is the default top for a black suit, but that doesn’t make it the only option. A cream or pale gray shirt could also work well, as could a crew-neck T-shirt, which will take your outfit in a completely different direction. When it comes to footwear, sadly, only black shoes will do.

The Patterned Suit

OK, so we said you only really need three suits - but if you’re looking for something with a bit more character, the patterned suit is a great shout (especially if you want to stand out from the crowd).

We recommend something in navy or gray with a slight check. You can alternate the trousers and jackets with other plain suits, but you can also dress them down with a pair of chinos at the weekend.
