What’s the Difference Between an Affordable Suit and a Premium Suit?

Updated: Aug 5

When purchasing men's suits, one of the most critical decisions you'll have to make is about whether to spend more on Premium Suits or go with better prices for Affordable Suits. Both have their positives and negatives.

If you know the key differences between Premium Suits and Affordable Suits, you can make an educated decision that fits both your personal style and your budget.

Material Quality

Premium Suits

Made with premium materials such as fine wool, silk and/or cashmere. They will typically provide a higher level of comfort, durability and luxury feel because these fabrics have benefits beyond just looking attractive. For example, they regulate body temperature providing a comfortable wearing experience in different types of climatic conditions.

Affordable Suit

In contrast, most Affordable Suits use lower grades of fabrics, are often predominately made of synthetic materials or mostly polyester. These fabrics do not perform to the same degree as the higher-quality fabrics which can produce less comfortable and can be less durable.

As a result, Affordable Suits will generally provide a less comfortable experience and tend to have shorter life spans than do Premium Suits.

Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail

Premium Suits

A key aspect of a Premium Suit is that they consist of very high levels of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Many Premium Suits are handmade while the majority will undergo extensive hours of hand-finishing.

Expert tailors will carefully craft every aspect of the suit including hand-stitched linings, functional buttonholes and excellently finished seams. All these details contribute to a premium quality product with impeccable construction and finish.

Affordable Suit

Unlike Premium Suits, most Affordable Suits will have significant mass production and therefore, while they may function well, they often lack the same craftsmanship and finish. This can lead to visible defects, uneven stitches and an overall less polished appearance.

While Affordable Suits may serve their intended purpose, they are less likely to demonstrate the upper level of quality and elegance associated with a Premium Suit.

Fit and Tailoring

Premium Suits

Premium Suits are also often available with customization. Premium Suits can be uniquely tailored to your specific measurements. Therefore, Premium Suits are fitted to your body shape precisely so that it appears and feels as if the suit was custom-made for you.

Affordable Suits

Affordable Suits can generally be bought in a range of sizes but they often do not provide easy tailoring and, therefore, require additional alterations before being properly fitted. The cost of these alterations may increase the overall cost of an Affordable Suit.

Durability

Premium Suits

Premium Suits are made of top-quality fabrics combined with careful construction, so the majority of Premium Suits will last longer than Affordable Suits. In addition, the additional construction requirements applied to Premium Suits typically enable them to withstand wear and tear longer than Affordable Suits.

Affordable Suit

On the contrary, Affordable Suits are constructed using lower-quality fabrics and have less stringent construction methods. Because of the fact that they are made of poorer quality materials and are manufactured using less stringent construction requirements, Affordable Suits will typically show signs of wear (and more quickly than Premium Suits) and therefore, typically require replacement before Premium Suits do.

Comfort and Breathability

Premium Suits

Premium Suits are created with the greatest emphasis on providing comfort and breathability in order to provide a more enjoyable wearing experience. All Premium Suits are made of premium quality fabrics that will provide both the appropriate level of comfort and body temperature regulation. Fabrics typically include wool and cashmere or linen or cotton for hotter and humid climates. Therefore, all Premium Suits will generally keep you comfortable regardless of the variety of weather conditions you may find yourself in when wearing a Premium Suit.

Affordable Suits

Since Affordable Suits are generally made of poor quality materials and therefore, will typically lack the same type of breathable qualities and/or provide the same level of comfort as do Premium Suits. Particularly, if you will be wearing an Affordable Suit in a hot climate, you may experience less comfort (when compared to wearing a Premium Suit) due to the fact that Affordable Suits are not manufactured using the same quality fabrics suitable for providing any level of comfort when worn in a hot climate. Fabrics typically include polyester, viscose, microfiber, or rayon.

Style and Design

Premium Suits

Premium Suits have classical and timeless style and design. Even though crafted with attention to the current fashions, Premium Suits are crafted in such a way that they can easily be worn for a long period of time and still be fashionable, and as fashions change over time, the Premium Suit can be adapted to these changes.

Affordable Suits

In contrast, Affordable Suits are more likely to feature generic styles and designs. Such Affordable Suits are typically mass-produced, often at the expense of being fashionable and, therefore, not easily adaptable to changing fashions.

Brand Recognition

Premium Suits

Many Premium Suits are manufactured by well-known fashion houses or Haute Couture (custom tailoring) designers, thus making purchasing a Premium Suit an indication of quality and expertise.

Affordable Suits

On other hand, Affordable Suits are not typically associated with being created by known designers, therefore, any Affordable Suit is less likely to represent any specific level of status associated with the suit being made by a known designer.

Price

Premium Suits

Premium Suits are more expensive than Affordable Suits because they represent a larger investment in terms of the cost of the materials used and the total cost of labor required to manufacture the suit and/ or the cost associated with the designer producing the suit. Although the price of a Premium Suit will be reflective of the superior quality and craftsmanship, it is still considered to be a premium price.

Affordable Suits

Affordable Suits will generally be sold at much lower prices than Premium Suits; therefore, they are significantly less expensive than Premium Suits. Most individuals will buy an Affordable suit either because they do not have enough financial resources or don’t have a need to wear a suit often enough.

Situations Where You Would Wear a Suit

Premium Suits

Premium Suits are typically reserved for formal occasions, such as business meetings and special events or occasions when you need to look your best or need to convey a polished image, i.e. a suit for formal business use.

Affordable Suits

Affordable Suits are generally worn on a less frequent basis, or as a less expensive alternative to being able to wear a suit on an occasional basis. As a result, Affordable Suits are not generally appropriate for very formal business attire or occasions.

Cleaning and Care

Premium Suits

Premium Suits typically have specific cleaning and care instructions that must be followed in order to maintain the integrity of the Premium Suit; therefore, you should refer to your specific cleaning and care instructions (which usually suggest taking to a professional dry cleaner and proper storage).

Affordable Suits

Affordable Suits generally require less maintenance and care as compared to Premium Suits and although not requiring the same level of maintenance and/or care as Premium Suits, Affordable Suits will likely not show as positive an aging process as Premium Suits.

Resale Value

Premium Suits

If well taken care of and purchased through a reputable retailer, Premium Suits will typically have a higher resale value than Affordable Suits. Therefore, should you decide to sell or trade your Premium Suit in the future, you may receive more of a return on your investment than you will if you decide to sell or trade your Affordable Suit.

Affordable Suits

Affordable Suits will not generally have high resale values. Due to their less expensive purchase prices (as compared to Premium Suits) and having been constructed using lower quality materials, Affordable Suits will rarely be purchased by another person.

Final Thoughts

Choosing between an Affordable Suit and a Premium Suit ultimately comes down to how often you plan to wear it, the impression you want to make, and your long-term budget. If you only need a suit for an occasional event, an Affordable Suit may provide the value you're looking for. However, if you regularly attend business meetings, weddings, formal events, or professional functions, investing in a Premium Suit can pay dividends through superior comfort, durability, fit, and timeless style. At the end of the day, the best suit is one that fits you well, reflects your personal style, and gives you confidence every time you put it on. By understanding the differences between Affordable Suits and Premium Suits, you'll be better equipped to choose a suit that delivers the right balance of quality, appearance, and value for your individual needs.
